Threesomes in Business: 3 Things to Focus on When Growing Your Business

Business Advisory

Planning on growing your business? Well, you better focus and let your mind run wild! Businesses don’t grow unless you have a clear vision of where you want it to go - and it all starts with you!Rome wasn’t built in a day, and it certainly didn’t become the way it was without some toga-clad Romans conceptualizing an empire that stretched across most of Europe. We see building a business the same way as building an empire: it requires paying attention to economic trends, conceiving clever strategies to outwit rivals, and trusting your people to make things happen. But before any of that can take place, it is important for you to map out the bigger picture so that you and your team know what you’re fighting for.As a start to #MohrMondays, we will be highlighting 3 of the most important considerations when mapping out your vision. After all, you can’t make something happen if you have no idea what you’re making.

1) Who/what the heck are you?

So you want to create a successful business. That’s great!... But what is your business all about? Are you coming up with new products or services that don’t exist in the market? Perhaps you’re making something that already exists except yours better than the rest. Whatever it is, it is important for you to start with a vision of what your corporate identity is so you can flesh out what you need to do in order to build on it.After you have a clear picture of what you want to achieve, you can start creating a roadmap on how you want to proceed. A few things to consider include:

  • How can the business be run in the most efficient and effective way possible? Are you making use of the tools available to you like Google’s SEO resources and social media?
  • How will you make sure that your team learns the necessary skills to blow the competition out of the water?
  • What equipment and tools do you need?
  • What will the financial aspect of the business look like? Consider things like cash flow, working capital, and payment channel.

Once you have an image of what your business looks like, it becomes much easier to determine what needs to be done in order to grow your business.

2) Create a roadmap that outlines kick-ass deliverables

So now that you have a better idea of what you want to achieve and what your business currently looks like, you can now start thinking about how you can eat up your competition (figuratively, of course). Start with a bit of housekeeping. Consider how you can make your product or service more appealing to your customers and providing your team with the means to learn the necessary skills to make it happen. Then look into how you can optimize your finances so that you can start getting the tools you need to provide those services and ensure long-term profitability. Optimizing your processes is also important as this makes your business more fluid, is easier for your team to follow, and lowers unnecessary costs. After the internal considerations have been addressed, you should start building your digital identity. After all, in 2020, businesses that dominate are those that have made it online. Consider building your business’s website, content marketing, social media, and other digital tools to take full advantage of the fact that both your current and future customers will most likely find you online.

3) It’s about time

Of course, nothing will ever move unless you give them time. You could have the most amazing idea in the world, but unless you are consistent with making it happen, it just won’t move. It’s true that day-to-day operations take up most of your time when running your business, but consider that only focusing on this will get in the way of long term growth. They say patience is a virtue and when building a business, THEY are right.  Some ways you can get around this include:

  • Conquer the fear of delegating tasks to people in your team to complete certain objectives. This not only makes sure that tasks are spread out across the board, but it will also provide your team members with the learning experience necessary to make the business flourish. Of course, if you only have a small team, it is possible to outsource the tasks as expenditures on growth is always worth it.
  • Creating a project plan to make tasks more manageable among your team members. Listing down a huge list of tasks may be overwhelming, but setting milestones for certain time periods makes the journey towards growth much easier to pursue.
  • Staying consistent and keeping your business a priority. Yes, most of the time, dealing with client matters may seem to be the most important task for a business, and we completely understand that. But remember that your business is like your family and friends - and they should always come first.

It’s really not that difficult, but the real challenge is identifying what needs to be done and how to do it. As they say, growth is painful and often takes effort to get to where you want to be. Don’t give up though, and make sure you always have your eyes on the goal.
